This week a question came across one of the homeschooling social media groups that I help with. A mother asked the group members if they had any suggestions for putting together a “Youtube video playlist of 5 -10 minute workouts”. She said it would be great for her family to have for a fun ” get up and move break in between lessons”.
A “get up and move break between lessons” is a wonderful idea, and I think most homeschooling families try to incorporate some sort of physical activity throughout their day. However, with it being winter and so many places having record breaking cold temperatures and snowfall records, sending the kids out to play, ride bikes, or run around the house just is not possible. A Youtube playlist of exercise type videos is exactly what is needed for that activity break between lessons.
A few of us moms pitched in with sharing and screening videos and below is the list of links that were deemed “homeschooling mom approved”. This cooperative break time playlist offers lots of variety! If you picked two or three of the following videos a day, you could watch them for several days without repeating any.

Dear reader, if you have a favorite Youtube video that you use in your homeschooling for exercise, would you please share it in the comments. There are homeschooling moms who need some more suggestions for their own “break time playlists”. Also, if you think you may be interested in joining a homeschooling social media group, I recommend joining either or both of these Facebook groups https://www.facebook.com/groups/567122276640599/ and https://www.facebook.com/groups/210519735725683/.

According to the special days in January list, January 8th is Joygerm Day! I’ve caught it (once again) and plan on trying my very best to make sure my family catches this germ and continues to spread it. It’s my understanding that the joygerm is highly contagious! You don’t even have to be in a physical setting to give it to someone else. It can be spread through a phone, computer, or a letter. You know, not all germs are bad, some are wonderful!
Below are some of the study links we’ll be following as our homeschooling special days lessons. Learning together today is going to be great!
Joygerm Day background http://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/joy-germ-day/
For Bible Study and Journaling
Many “joy” Bible quotes to choose from any version of choice (just type in “joy” in the search bar) http://www.biblegateway.com/
Famous quotes about joy http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/keywords/joy.html
For Science:
Happiness: Contagious as the Flu is a good article explaining the science of joy http://www.livescience.com/3110-happiness-contagious-flu.html
For “Socialization” (because we home educators have to get that included) the assignment is simple….”be intentional about spreading joy to others”.
I hope that you, dear reader, get infected with the Joygerm as well (if you haven’t been exposed to it yet) and contaminate many others!

It has been a marvelous Christmas break, however it’s time to get started on the second half of our homeschooling year. Over the holidays, I happened to run across some interesting sites for us to take a closer look at once we settled back into our daily learning routine. Below are the best of those “new to me” online resources that we’ll be giving a try this first week back to full time homeschooling. I think we are headed for a fun start to 2014 learning!
These first couple of weeks we won’t be having specific science lessons, but I know my kids, and science is their favorite, so I should add a little science into our plans. These two sites look like great fun! Interactive, kid friendly chemistry site! http://humantouchofchemistry.com/index.htm and Physics interactive games http://www.physicsgames.net/
My younger boys are getting to the age where they like to learn on their own and research topics of interest like the “big kids” do. However, regular search engines aren’t set up to be child appropriate. This link is for a research site which is designed for children up to about the 6th grade level. I’m impressed with all the short and easy to understand articles and activities http://www.kidcyber.com.au/
After all the craft projects we worked on during the holidays, our supplies are running low. Instead of restocking from the art supply store, I thought we should give making our own supplies a try. There are several DIY paint recipes here to get us started http://handsonaswegrow.com/50-paint-activities-tools-methods-recipes/ And creative playdough recipes http://www.freehomeschooldeals.com/how-to-make-easy-homemade-play-dough-50-play-doh-recipes-and-ideas/ And homemade glue http://sustainableecho.com/homemade-natural-glue/
Most of the online learning sites I find are geared for lower grades, so I was excited to find this site which offers higher math videos and games. I think it will be a nice change up from worksheets for some extra math practice for my teens http://mathflix.luc.edu/Student/nctm-mathflix-student-page.html
I’m aware that sometimes lessons can be boring. Grammar falls into that category fairly often. If the kids don’t find a topic fun or interesting, they do not retain the information for long. This collection of grammar videos is not just fun, they’re funny, and these short lessons will be worth remembering http://www.gcflearnfree.org/labs/grammarvideos
Our history studies are based on early American history this year. This site has some improv/ drama based games to play to add some entertainment to our history lessons http://freedramaplays.blogspot.com/2013/07/american-revolution-improv-games-4th-of.html
There’s tremendous learning potential from the listing of special days in January! In fact, our planner/calendar is starting to fill up. https://stilllearningsomethingnew.com/2013/12/22/draft-special-days-in-january/
I’m hoping that teaching and learning can be as much fun as possible this new year for all of us! Happy 2nd semester!

As the year comes to an end, of course I’m thinking about resolutions. I’m not so great with New Year’s resolutions. Over the years I’ve broken nearly every one…diet, exercise, pray harder, memorize Scriptures, less caffeine, spend less, organize, quit yelling, better housekeeping, go to church more, and on and on. I’ve even had years when discouragement and fear of failing has kept me from making any new ones.
Instead of making resolutions the past few years I’ve set “doable” goals. I have been slightly more successful with the goals than the resolutions. Slightly. I set the goal of learning computer skills a couple of years ago, and I did. Last year I set the goal of starting a blog, and I met that goal, too.
Whether resolutions or goals, my family does it with me. Whatever we choose, we write it on paper and put them in a time capsule (a plastic container). Our capsule gets buried with the Christmas decorations, then when we decorate the following December, we can review how we’ve done and if progress hasn’t been made, there’s still a bit of time to work on it. Here’s a link for a printable for New Year’s time capsules http://www.freehomeschooldeals.com/free-printable-end-of-the-year-time-capsule-questions/ This interview printable will be a great thing to include in the time capsule, too http://www.homeschoolshare.com/blog/2013/12/creating-new-years-family-traditions-free-printable/
I happened across a blog post and thought “YES! This is how we should do it this year.” Just pick one word and let it become the focus of the year. One word, seems easy enough. I’ve thought about my word, re-read the post and other’s suggestions, prayed, and I now have my word. I’m thinking this isn’t going to be so easy after all. My one word focus for 2014 is “IMPROVE”. I am not even close to “perfect” in any area of my life, there is much room to improve absolutely everything. I imagine this will be my daily question to myself. “What is one thing I can do today to improve my life and the life of someone else?” This is the link for the One Word One Year Transformed Forever article http://forthefamily.org/one-word-one-year-transformed-forever/
This time of year, there are several challenges starting. Being part of a group challenge is not a bad idea. I find accountability to the others attempting the challenge to be great motivator . Knowing that others are working (struggling) on the same issue is encouraging . Short term challenges suit me best. Surely, I can do something that improves my life for a few weeks, and may possibly develop into something more long term. Even when past challenges have failed, I can look back and remember that one time I actually exercised everyday for a couple of weeks, read “x” amount of Scripture, or went on such a cleaning frenzy that even the back corner of the junk drawer was spotless. Below are some of the short term challenges I think will be worth attempting and perhaps repeating throughout 2014.

May God bless us, everyone in 2014,

Our homeschooling winter break has officially started! Though practicing skills with last minute shopping, crafting, baking, parties, and parts in a Christmas play, the learning doesn’t stop.
Since studies won’t be mandatory, our thoughts can be focused on Christmas, fun, and playing Santa, (We decided when our oldest was young not to encourage a “belief” in Santa, but to encourage idea and play of Santa. We each draw a name and are responsible for filling that family members stocking, wrapping a gift or two and eating the cookies left out.)
Without lessons, my kids will no doubt be asking for extra computer time. I found these fun “Santa” sites for the kids to play on.
Track Santa on the map, play interactive games and more http://www.noradsanta.org/
Join Raymond the Reindeer for a tour of the North Pole, short stories, and interactive games http://www.northpole.com/
A wonderful selection of Christmas themed games http://www.primarygames.com/holidays/christmas/games.php
The “Naughty or Nice ” rating from this site may not be accurate because this is what Santa said about me, “Nicer than nice. A real champ! I was really proud of all the hard work that went towards changing those “naughty” habits of last year. Treated friends nicely and was exceptionally honest (which happens to be one of my favorite traits!) It’s amazing what a good old fashioned “I’m sorry!” can do for a rating. Keep up the good work!” http://www.claus.com/naughtyornice/index.php
Claus.com has many other activities including an updated North Pole weather forecast, attend “Elf School” and earn your diploma, and more activities http://www.claus.com/village.php

All of our Christmas fun won’t be from the computer, but will come from just being together as a family. These game ideas are great for that special family time http://www.blessedbeyondadoubt.com/printable-christmas-party-games-for-teens/
Have a Very Merry Christmas Break!

Our Christmas studies have been going well. We’ve been covering Christmas themed Bible, social studies, math, foreign language, music and language arts lessons since the beginning of December. However, science studies have been lacking. For our final week of learning of the semester, we’ll be focusing on science but will still be keeping our Christmas theme.
How It’s Made is a science discovery site which features short videos. Here your family can watch how glass ornaments, artificial trees, and candy canes are made. http://www.sciencechannel.com/search/?q=how+it%27s+made+christmas
Made How is a “new to me” site. While exploring there, I found helpful articles explaining the background, materials, design, and manufacturing of popular holiday items. This site doesn’t have an index or search bar, so I’ve linked to each item individually below.
