Learning Resources – March Themes

The following post has been updated for 2017 here  https://stilllearningsomethingnew.com/2017/03/01/march-resources/

One of the most frequently asked questions I receive is, “How do you use monthly themes  for your homeschooling lessons?”  My answer –  I start by printing off the list of March themes and special days (https://stilllearningsomethingnew.com/2014/02/26/special-days-in-march/ ) , then I place a check mark by the topics I would like to teach.  Next, I pass the list off to the kids and let them check off what they think they would find interesting.  Then the research begins for web sites, library books, and videos.  Below are some of the links we will be following as we study and learn through March.

Dolphin Awareness

My friend, Fran, has already developed a wonderful Dolphin study.  I love it when I can use her lesson plans.  She shares the best stuff!  http://www.franw.com/2013/11/dolphins-research-resource.html

This should give you some idea about how we use special monthly themes for homeschooling lessons.  I was curious about how other home educators use themes and special days, so I asked.  These are some of the answers:

“To introduce different foods to my picky eaters!”

To decide themes for a day. To plan field trips.”

To find something inspiring to blog about!.”

“Science lessons.”

“Find a reason to celebrate!”

Dear reader, I would love to know how you’re using themes and special days in your homeschools.  Please leave a comment!

I’ve never really thought of doing it this way. Usually, our extra curricular activities are centered around larger festivals in the month – for example, March would be St. Patrick’s Day and so we would spend time with coloring sheets, bedtime stories about leprechauns etc. You seem to have an amazing thing going!
